Tax Filing and Payment Deadlines:
APRIL 30
Tax filing deadline for individuals
The deadline to file your personal income tax return is April 30, unless you’re self‑employed. However, the CRA encourages individuals who expect to receive benefits under the GST Credit or the Canada Child Benefit not to delay the filing of their tax return to ensure their entitlements for the benefit year are properly determined.
JUNE 15
Tax filing deadline for self-employed individuals
The deadline to file your taxes is June 15 if you’re self‑employed. However, any amount owing to CRA must still be paid by April 30.
APRIL 15
Deadline to submit your tax documents
Your tax documents and information must submitted to my office no later than April 15 to ensure your return is completed and filed on time. Submissions received after April 15 cannot be guaranteed by April 30, however every effort will still be made to complete and file on time. Returns are processed on a first-come-first-serve basis.
RRSP’s: Find your RRSP contribution limit on your Notice of Assessment or look it up on your CRA My Account.
RRIF’s: December 31 of the year you turn 71 is the last day you can contribute to your own RRSP. RRSP’s must be converted to a RRIF by the end of the year in which the owner turns 71.
TFSA’s: Money earned through your Tax-Free Savings Account is tax-free and is therefore not reported on your income tax return.
Interest & Penalties:
Late Filing Interest – if you have a balance owing, the CRA charges compound daily interest starting May 1, on any unpaid amounts owing for the tax year. This includes any balance owing if the CRA reassesses your return. The prescribed annual rate of interest the CRA charges is 5%.
Late Filing Penalty – the CRA will charge you a late-filing penalty if you file your tax return after April 30 and you owe tax that remains unpaid at that time. The penalty is 5% of your tax return balance owing, plus 1% of your balance owing for each full month your return was filed after April 30, to a maximum of 12 months.
Tip: Even if you cannot pay your full balance owing on or before April 30, you can avoid the late-filing penalty by filing your return on time. For more information, visit CRA’s website: click here
CRA My Account – if you haven’t already done so, now’s the time to register for your My Account. Here, you can track your refund, check your benefit and credit payments, set up or change your direct deposit banking information, view your RRSP / TFSA limits, view your online mail, access past Notice of Assessments, reprint your filed T4’s or other tax slips, and more! By having an online account, this doesn’t mean everything moves online – you can still receive paper notices of all correspondence from CRA.
